3G Development in China March 8-14

- Henan Telecom, a subsidiary of China Telecom in Henan, recently announced that the company deployed around 4,000 base stations based on CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) technology in 2009, bring its total 3G base stations to around 8,000, the Sohu IT news reported on March 9. Meanwhile, Henan Telecom's CDMA service is available in 18 cities of the province, with its network coverage reaching out to around 99.1% in all prefecture- and county-level cities, as well as major townships in the said province. China Telecom stated that the number of its CDMA end-market terminals totaled nearly 400 models in 2009, up from around 100 models in 2008.

 

- Unicom Vsens, a wholly-owned subsidiary of China Unicom dedicated to mobile phone distribution, alleged that China Unicom's tailor-made WCDMA (Wideband CDMA) Smartphone manufactured by Motorola is now available for sale in China, the China Tech News reported on March 12. The Smartphone, codenamed the XT701, operates based on Google Android 2.0 platform and is compatible with WCDMA, and Wi-Fi (Wireless-Fidelity)/WAPI (Wireless Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure), with a price tag of 4,299 RMB (US$632.2; US$ = 6.8 RMB). China Unicom stated that the XT701 can be purchased at its major business halls, electronics retail stores, including Suning and Gome, in medium and large cities, as well as mobile phone specialty stores. In addition, people can also buy the XT701 on China Unicom's online store at 10010.com and Vsens' online store at Vsens.com, according to the same source.
